Resonance is what remains when the role ends, but the meaning still rings true.
Passage:
Leaving the principalship was harder for me than I expected.
For a long time, I focused on what was unfinished. The dreams that felt so close. The ideas that had life in them but would now belong to another time, or maybe to no time at all. It is hard to leave a place you poured yourself into and not feel, at least for a while, like you left something important behind.
That kind of thinking can stay loud if you let it.
But with distance, I started to hear something else.
I started to realize the most important part of that work was never just the plans, the programs, or the goals. It was the people. The relationships we built. The trust we created. The feeling of what was possible when a group of people came together and gave themselves fully to something bigger than themselves.
That is what resonance feels like to me now.
Not everything lasts in an organization. Roles change. People move on. The chapter turns.
But something real can still remain.
I carry those relationships with me. I carry the energy of what we built together. I carry the reminder that meaningful work does not disappear just because the job ends. Because what was built there did not end just because I left. It still lives in me. And I believe it still lives in the people who were part of it too. Not in some perfect or polished way. Just in the real way meaningful experiences stay with us and shape how we move through the world.
We all leave roles. We all leave places that once held a piece of us.
The choice is whether we hold only the regret, or whether we also hold the deeper truth: we gave what we had, we built something real together, and that kind of impact keeps living on in people.
That is resonance.
