The Match | Triage

Word: Triage

Sentence:

Triage is knowing that everything can matter without everything mattering first.

Passage:

Leadership has a way of making everything feel important at the same time.

A principal can start the day with a clear plan and, before lunch, be dealing with a student in crisis, a teacher who needs support, an upset parent, a staffing issue, a safety concern, a budget deadline, and three emails marked urgent.

The hard part is that most of those things really do matter.

That is why leadership is not simply about getting more done. Sometimes the work is figuring out what needs you now and what should wait.

I learned that the loudest problem is not always the most important one. The newest request does not automatically deserve to move to the top of the list. And being responsive to everyone can eventually make us less useful to the people and problems that need us most.

That is triage.

In an emergency room, triage is not deciding who matters and who does not. It is deciding who needs attention first. Leadership asks us to make that same distinction every day.

What gets worse if I wait? What needs my attention but not necessarily today? What can someone else handle? Where am I actually needed, and where have I simply gotten used to being the person who handles everything?

Sometimes the answer is the student sitting in front of you. Sometimes it is the difficult conversation you have been avoiding. Sometimes it is protecting an hour to think instead of responding to another twenty emails.

And sometimes it is saying, “This matters, but it does not have to happen right now.”

I think this is just as true outside of work. Families have bills, schedules, aging parents, children who need us, relationships that need attention, homes that need fixing, and our own health somewhere in the middle of all of it. There are seasons when almost everything feels important.

But we only have so much time, energy, and attention to give.

Trying to give everything first place usually leaves us exhausted and still wondering what we missed.

Triage does not mean something does not matter.

It means we are clear enough to decide what matters first.

Your Turn:

If everything cannot be first, what should be?
